Synopsis

CORP SMT STARTED APCH TO WRONG ARPT.

Narrative

WHILE INBND FROM THE NE TO ELP I WAS CLRED DIRECT TO THE NEWMAN VOR (EWM) THEN DIRECT TO ELP. AFTER SELECTING EWM ON THE RNAV; IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT I WAS GETTING ERRONEOUS INFO. THE BEARING WAS NEARLY 180 DEGS OFF AND THE DISTANCE WAS ABOUT 475 NM HIGH. I NOW GOT MYSELF INVOLVED WITH TRYING TO TROUBLE SHOOT THE RNAV WITH LORAN AND DATABASE. WE WERE IN AN AREA OF POOR LORAN COVERAGE; SO I DISABLED THE LORAN AND USED ONLY VOR/DME INFO FROM EWM. THE RAW DATA WAS CORRECT AND THE DATA BASE INFO WAS CORRECT; BUT I KEPT ON GETTING THE SAME INCORRECT INFO. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINS OF THIS; I LOOKED UP AND SAW RWY 22 OR SO I THOUGHT! TOLD APCH AND THEY CLRED ME FOR A VISUAL APCH. TUNED IN THE ILS AND GOT A PULL DEFLECTION TO THE LEFT; EVEN THOUGH I WAS ON CENTERLINE (BIG HINT!). I REASONED THAT MY (ILS RECEIVER) WAS ALL MESSED UP AND CONTINUED THE APCH. ON ABOUT A 5 MI FINAL APCH INFORMED ME THAT I APPEARED TO BE LINED UP WITH RWY 21 AT BIGGS ARMY AIRFIELD! BE DAMNED IF THEY WEREN'T RIGHT! THIS ALSO EXPLAINS WHY I COULDN'T FIND THE ACFT I WAS TO FOLLOW. MADE AN EASY SIDESTEP TO ELP RWY 22 AND LANDED. I FLY IN AND OUT OF ELP ALL THE TIME AND STILL GOT FAKED OUT BY BIGGS BECAUSE I LOST SIGHT OF THE BIG PICTURE. WHEN ON AN APCH IS NO TIME TO BE TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR HIGH TECH GEAR. GO BACK TO RAW DATA AND WORRY ABOUT IT LATER OR YOU MIGHT BE MISLED.
