Synopsis

ACR LGT CLIMBING OVERSHOT TURN ONTO AIRWAY AND CAME NEAR ACR-LGT DESCENDING; OPPOSITE DIRECTION ON PARALLEL COURSE.

Narrative

DEPARTED LAX ON THE GORMAN DEP SHAFTER TRANSITION. OVER SHAFTER VOR; CLBING THROUGH FL315; ZLA ASKED ME TO STOP THE CLB AND TURN LEFT 20 DEGS TO AVOID A POSSIBLE CONFLICT WITH LGT Y ON PARALLEL RADAR VECTOR IN THE DSCNT. HIS DSCNT WAS STOPPED AT FL328 AND IT WAS EXPLAINED THAT A POSSIBLE CONFLICT EXISTED. UPON INQUIRY I WAS INFORMED THAT I WAS 3.5 MI OFF CENTERLINE. MY POS WAS DIRECTLY OVER SHAFTER TURNING OUTBND TO 328 DEG R TO INTERCEPT J65. CONSIDERING THE ARWY IS A 4 MI EITHER SIDE OF CENTERLINE; I FEEL THAT A CONFLICT MAY HAVE EXISTED BUT WAS INDUCED BY THE RADAR VECTOR; IN THAT I WAS IN MY PROTECTED AIRSPACE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR MADE A TELEPHONE CALL TO ZLA FROM DEST. HE WAS INFORMED THAT SEP WAS NOT LOST; BUT IT WAS VERY CLOSE. RPTR'S FLT APPARENTLY OVERSHOT THE VORTAC BY ABOUT 4 MI AND THIS WAS JUST FAR ENOUGH TO BRING HIS ACFT CLOSER TO THE OTHER LGT THAN THE CTLR WAS EXPECTING. THE OTHER LGT WAS BEING VECTORED ON A PARALLEL COURSE TO FACILITATE ITS DSCNT AND RPTR'S SMALL DEVIATION FROM COURSE CAUSED MUCH CONCERN.
