Synopsis

A90 Controller noted a wrong direction turn by a departure who failed to update the assigned RNAV SID in the FMS after a runway change; the reporter suggested the Tower insure proper routing prior to issuing take off clearance.

Narrative

An EMB-190 departed Runway 22R at BOS. Aircraft did not check in where one normally would. I noticed aircraft was not southeast bound toward first RNAV fix. I called Tower to verify that the aircraft was indeed who he was; as the Tower's strip was now gone from the camera. They verified it was the EMB-190. As I was requesting that they tried switching him to my frequency and the aircraft checked in. I turned him to the southeast to avoid aircraft that were on final for Runway 27. I asked the pilot if he was on the RNAV SID for Runway 22R; and he explained that they originally had Runway 9 assigned as a departure runway and that the runway change to 22R apparently did not get entered into the aircraft's system. The aircraft was heading opposite direction to Runway 27 arrivals as he was on the Runway 9 RNAV SID. This situation was made worse by the aircraft not checking in to Approach in a timely manner. Recommendation: during runway change/s; maybe the Tower can somehow verify with the taxiing aircraft the proper RNAV SID.
