Synopsis

SMT CLIMBING TO ASSIGNED ALT HAD WRONG ALTIMETER SETTING AND APPARENTLY A BAD TRANSPONDER. ACFT CLIMBED ABOVE ASSIGNED ALT AND WAS DISTRACTED BY HOT MOA'S.

Narrative

AS I WAS CLBING THROUGH APPROX 6500 TO 8000' ASSIGNED; ZFW GAVE ME A VECTOR TO AVOID AN MOA WHICH I QUESTIONED DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WANTED TO GO TO RICK MOUNTAIN VOR WHICH IS BTWN 2 MOA'S. AT THIS TIME I OPENED MY CHARTS TO CONFIRM THAT MY COURSE DID NOT GO THROUGH THE MOA'S. ZFW'S ANSWER WAS THAT IT WAS A SPECIAL OPS AREA FOR 1 WK. THIS INFO WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NOTAMS I RECEIVED FROM ZFW FSS AT XX00 AM LCL TIME. I LATER QUESTIONED PONCA CITY FSS ABOUT THIS AND THEY TOO DID NOT HAVE ANY NOTAMS ON THIS AND COULD NOT GET ANY INFO FROM ZKC. I LOOKED UP FROM MY CHARTS AND SAW MY ALT AT 8100' AND EFFECTED A LEVEL OFF AT 8200' INDICATED. ZFW CALLED AT THIS TIME AND ASKED MY ASSIGNED ALT AND I REPLIED 8000'. CENTER SAID I INDICATED 8600' AND GAVE THE ALTIMETER SETTING AT 3044. I HAD SET MY ALTIMETER AT 3034 ACCOUNTING FOR ANOTHER 100'. I CORRECTED BACK TO 8000' INDICATED AND AFTER SOME MINUTES CENTER INFORMED ME I WAS STILL INDICATING 8300' AND TO DISCONTINUE ALT SQUAWK WHICH I DID FOR THE REST OF THE FLT.
