Synopsis

LANDED GEAR UP ON TRAINING FLT.

Narrative

DEPARTED LANGLEY AFB IN A CLUB ACFT ON TRNING FLT. PLT WAS RECEIVING ACFT FAMILIARIZATION AND CHKOUT TRNING AFTER AIR WORK. WE WENT TO PATRICK HENRY ARPT FOR TOUCH GO LNDGS. ON FOURTH PATTERN DOWNWIND; I CALLED OUT THE GUMP CHK AND OBSERVED PLT CHKING FUEL SELECTOR. TWR CALLED OUT TFC AND WE WERE TOLD TO EXTEND DOWNWIND. I DID NOT CONFIRM THAT HE COMPLETED THE GUMP CHK SINCE I WAS LOOKING FOR PATTERN TFC. WE MADE A NORMAL APCH AND DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE LNDG GEAR WAS NOT DOWN. GEAR UP LNDG WAS MADE WITH DAMAGE TO PROP AND MINOR FUSELAGE DAMAGE. NO FIRE; NO INJURIES. MINOR DAMAGE; NO EXCUSE. FACTORS. 1) RIGHT PATTERN. THE INSTR IS LOOKING MOSTLY TOWARD THE LNDG RWY FOR OTHER TFC. LEFT TFC THE INSTR IS LOOKING ACROSS THE ACFT AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONTROLS ARE MORE IN VIEW. 2) THE GUMP CHK WAS COMPLETED EXCEPT LOWERING THE LNDG GEAR. THE MIXTURE WAS FULL RICH AND PROP FULL FORWARD (UNKNOWN WHY GEAR NOT LOWERED.) 3) ACFT WAS IN COMMISSION ON FLT BOARD. HOWEVER; THE LNDG GEAR UP WARNING HORN SYS WAS INOPERATIVE SINCE 10/88. I WAS AWARE; BUT I FEEL THIS IS DEFINITELY A FACTOR.
