2011-12 · NASA ASRS report 983439
A Dash 8 flight crew noticed a Master Warning Smoke light illuminated several times. They diverted to a suitable nearby airport.
En route we noticed the Master Warning Light associated with the SMOKE warning light. I immediately notified Center we were declaring an emergency and wanted to divert to [a nearby] airport with an immediate descent to 10;000 FT. Before I could finish making my request with Center the associated lights extinguished. The lights then flashed again after 30 seconds but for only a couple of flashes. After declaring the emergency; diverting; and starting the descent we put on our oxygen masks. We then read the Smoke Warning Checklist. Our Flight Attendant reported everything was normal. Next I called Dispatch; but had to relay our messages through another one of our company's flights. I just wanted to inform them and for them to call operations. We landed less then 15 minutes after first indication. The warning light never flashed after our second indication. On approach I requested the fire trucks to follow us off the runway. After clearing the runway I asked if there was any evidence of smoke or fire; I got a reply 'No' so I taxied to the gate for a normal deplaning.
