NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
THE BOARD RECOMMENDED: 1. ANOTHER FIX BE DEPICTED ON THE VOR/DME APPROACH CHART BETWEEN THE FINAL APPROACH FIX AND THE AIRPORT/ MINIMUM DESCENT POINT AND A MINIMUM CROSSING ALTITUDE RESTRICTION SHOULD BE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FIX. 2. THAT THE HEIGHT ABOVE GROUND AT THE FINAL APPROACH FIX BE DEPICTED IN THE PROFILE PORTION OF THE INSTRUMENT APPROACH CHART ADJACENT TO THE MINIMUM SEA LEVEL ATTITUDE PRESCRIBED OVER EACH FIX. DISPLAYED ON THE PROFILE.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
This recommendation urges the FAA to improve instrument approach charts by adding a specific waypoint between the final approach fix and the airport, along with a required altitude for crossing that point. It also asks that the height of the final approach fix above ground level be clearly shown on the chart’s profile view next to the existing minimum altitude data. These changes aim to provide pilots with clearer visual cues and precise altitude information during critical phases of landing.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
