NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation

Recommendation text

THE BOARD RECOMMENDED: 1. A DETAILED REVIEW BE MADE OF THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURES OF ALL OPERATORS OF BOEING 707 SERIES AND LIKE AIRCRAFT TO CLARIFY TROUBLE-SHOOTING OF HYDRAULIC SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE OPERATION OF THE HYDRAULIC PUMP CONTROL SWITCHES. 2. THE RUDDER PUMP LOW PRESSURE LIGHT CIRCUITRY BE MODIFIED TO REMAIN ON ANY TIME THE RUDDER BOOST PRESSURE IS LOST, REGARDLESS OF THE RUDDER HYDRAULIC PUMP SWITCH POSITION.

In plain language (FlightFinder summary)

The NTSB urged the FAA to ensure airlines clearly train crews on how to handle hydraulic failures in Boeing 707 aircraft, specifically regarding pump controls. Additionally, the agency was asked to fix the warning light system so it stays illuminated whenever rudder pressure drops, regardless of whether the pilot has switched the pumps on or off. This aims to prevent confusion during emergencies by making critical system faults immediately obvious.

This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
