NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
REPLACEMENT FITTINGS WITH AN IMPROVED DESIGN BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE OPERATORS AT THE TIME OF THE INSPECTION IF POSSIBLE. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO REWORKING FITTINGS OF THE PRESENT DESIGN TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE INTERNAL FILLETS AND A GOOD SURFACE FINISH WHILE RETAINING THE REQUIRED THICKNESS. CONSIDERATION SHOULD ALSO BE GIVEN TO SHOT PEENING THE INTERNAL FILLET AREA OF THE REWORKED FITTINGS.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The FAA should provide operators with upgraded fittings that feature a better design whenever they perform inspections. If new parts are unavailable, the agency should allow existing fittings to be modified so they have smooth internal corners and proper wall thickness. The recommendation also suggests treating these repaired areas with a process that strengthens the metal against fatigue.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
