NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
ESTABLISH A GROUP II TRAFFIC CONTROL AREA TO ENCOMPASS THE FOLLOWING AIRPORTS IN THE TIDEWATER AREA: OCEANA NAVAL AIR STATION, NORFOLK NAVAL AIR STATION, NORFOLK REGIONAL AIRPORT, LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, PATRICK HENRY AIRPORT, AND FELKER ARMY AIRFIELD. SHOULD THIS PROVE IMPRACTICAL, WE RECOMMEND THAT THE FAA AND DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DOD) JOINT REVIEW GROUP COORDINATE AND ESTABLISH A TERMINAL RADAR SERVICE AREA (TRSA), SIMILAR TO THE ONE IN SACRAMENTO VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, WHICH WILL ENCOMPASS THE TIDEWATER AREA.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The NTSB urged the FAA to create a specific controlled airspace zone covering several military and civilian airports in the Tidewater region. If establishing this primary type of zone was not feasible, the agency should instead work with the Department of Defense to set up a terminal radar service area for the same location. This approach mirrors a similar safety measure implemented in California to improve air traffic management.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
