NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation

Recommendation text

THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: ISSUE AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE REQUIRING AN IMMEDIATE INSPECTION OF ALL LIFT STRUT FORKS ON THOSE PIPER AIRCRAFT ENUMERATED IN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE 58-10-02 FOR INDICATIONS OF CRACKING. INSTITUTE FORK REPLACEMENT/INSPECTION INTERVALS MORE STRINGENT FOR FORKS WITH CUT-THREADS THAN THOSE SPECIFIED IN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE 58-10-02. LIMIT ACCEPTABLE REPLACEMENT FORKS TO THOSE WITH ROLLED-THREADS. (URGENT)

In plain language (FlightFinder summary)

The NTSB asks the FAA to issue an airworthiness directive mandating immediate inspection of lift strut forks on specific Piper aircraft listed in AD 58-10-02 for signs of cracking. Additionally, the FAA should establish stricter replacement and inspection intervals for forks with cut threads compared to those already required, and allow only rolled-thread forks as replacements.

This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
