NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation

Recommendation text

THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT, AS AN INTERIM MEASURE, THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: IMMEDIATELY ISSUE AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE TO REQUIRE MORE CONSERVATIVE REPETITIVE INSPECTION INTERVALS AND A CONSERVATIVE LIFE LIMIT TO THE STAGE 1 HIGH PRESSURE TURBINE DISK P/N 9045 M34 P07 AND 9045 M34 P09. THE CYCLIC LIMITS SPECIFIED SHOLD BE PREDICATED ON BOTH THE LOWEST NUMBER OF CYCLES AT WHICH CRACKS HAVE BEEN DETECTED IN SERVICE EXPERIENCE AND THE ESTIMATED PROPAGATION RATE OF THE CRACKS. (URGENT)

In plain language (FlightFinder summary)

The NTSB asks the FAA to issue an airworthiness directive that tightens the inspection schedule and sets a conservative life limit for two models of high-pressure turbine disks (part numbers 9045 M34 P07 and 9045 M34 P09). The new cycle limits should reflect the earliest point at which cracks have appeared in service and the estimated speed at which those cracks grow. This is an urgent interim measure.

This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
