NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation

Recommendation text

THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: ISSUE AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE TO REQUIRE PERIODIC INSPECTION OF THE MAIN LANDING GEAR DOOR AFT HINGE BOLTS ON FAIRCHILD SWEARINGEN MODEL SA226 AIRPLANES THAT ARE AFFECTED BY SB 32-026 UNTIL THE MODIFICATION PRESCRIBED BY THE SER VICE BULLETIN HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE AIRPLANE MANUFACTURER, DETERMINE WHETHER THE NEED MAY EXIST TO EXPAND SB 32-026 TO REQUIRE THAT THE FORWARD HINGE BOLTS BE SAFETY-WIRED TO THEIR HINGE BRACKETS.

In plain language (FlightFinder summary)

The NTSB asks the FAA to issue an airworthiness directive mandating periodic inspections of the main landing gear door aft hinge bolts on certain Fairchild Swearingen Model SA226 airplanes covered by Service Bulletin 32-026, continuing until the bulletin's modification is completed. Additionally, the FAA, with the airplane manufacturer, should assess whether the service bulletin needs to be expanded to require safety-wiring of the forward hinge bolts to their hinge brackets.

This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
