NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: AMEND 14 CFR 25 AND SFAR NO. 23 TO REQUIRE THAT THE STOWAGE COMPARTMENTS FOR LIFE PRESERVERS BE LOCATED WHERE THE LIFE PRESERVERS WILL NOT BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO WATER IMPACT CRASH DAMAGE OR TO CABIN FLOODING; AMEND 14 CFR 121, 125, AND 135 TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THE AMENDMENTS TO PART 25 AND SFAR NO. 23 AND TO REQUIRE COMPLIANCE WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME AFTER ADOPTION OF THE AMENDMENT TO PART 25 AND SFAR NO. 23. (Supersedes Safety Recommendations A-79-067 and A-84-020)
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The NTSB asks the FAA to revise 14 CFR Part 25 and SFAR No. 23 so that life preserver stowage compartments are placed where the preservers are protected from water impact crash damage or cabin flooding. Additionally, the FAA should update 14 CFR Parts 121, 125, and 135 to align with those changes and require compliance within a reasonable timeframe. This replaces earlier recommendations A-79-067 and A-84-020.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
