NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: ISSUE AN AIR CARRIER OPERATIONS BULLETIN TO REQUIRE THAT PRINCIPAL OPERATIONS INSPECTORS FOR FAIRCHILD SWEARINGEN SA-226 AND SA-227 AIR CARRIER OPERATORS ADVISE OEPRATORS TO LEAVE THE ENGINE IGNITION SYSTEM IN THE "CONTINUOUS" MODE (PRESENTLY LABELED AS OVRD) DURING FLIGHT CONDITIONS INTO VISIBLE ICING, HEAVY RAIN OR MOISTURE, AND IF ICING IS ENCOUNTERED, TO LEAVE THE IGNITION SYSTEM IN THE "CONTINUOUS" MODE UNTIL ASSURING THAT THE AIRFRAME AND ENGINE STRUCTURES ARE FREE OF ICE.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The Federal Aviation Administration should issue an air carrier operations bulletin mandating that principal operations inspectors for Fairchild Swearingen SA-226 and SA-227 operators instruct operators to keep the engine ignition system in the continuous (labeled as OVRD) mode when flying into visible icing, heavy rain, or moisture, and, if icing occurs, to maintain that mode until confirming the airframe and engines are ice-free.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
