NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
THE NSTB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINSTRATION: ISSUE AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE TO MAKE MANDATORY THE INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS OF PIPER AIRCRAFT CORPORATION SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 845 AND TO REQUIRE THE IMMEDIATE ONE TIME INSPECTION OF ALL AFFECTED PA-31 LINK ASSEMBLIES, P/N 40279, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE METHODS DESCRIBED IN THE SERVICE BULLETIN. ALSO, CLARIFY AND DISSEMINATE TO OPERATORS CRACK RECOGNITION CRITERIA AND MORE SPECIFIC CRACKING LIMITS BEYOND WHICH REPLACEMENT OF THE LINK IS REQUIRED.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The Federal Aviation Administration is asked to issue an airworthiness directive that makes mandatory the inspection steps in Piper Service Bulletin No. 845, requiring an immediate one-time inspection of all affected PA-31 link assemblies (part number 40279) using the methods described in that bulletin. Additionally, the FAA should clarify and share with operators clear criteria for recognizing cracks and specific limits for when the link must be replaced.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
