Recommendation text
THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: ISSUE AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE TO REQUIRE AN IMMEDIATE INSPECTION OF THE MAIN WING SPARS AND UPPER WING SKIN AT THE WING ROOT PIPER PA-28 AIRPLANE WITH OVER A SPECIFIED NUMBER OF SERVICE HOURS FOR EVIDENCE OF CRACKING. PARTICULAR ATTENTION SHOULD BE PLACED ON INSPECTING THE BOTTOM SURFACE OF THE LOWER SPAR CAP ADJACENT TO THE OUTBOARD FORWARD ATTACHMENT BOLT HOLE AT THE WING ROOT ATTACHMENT, AS WELL AS ALONG THE UPPER WING SKIN ADJACENT TO THE FUSELAGE JUST FORWARD OF THE MAIN SPAR. (URGENT)
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The Federal Aviation Administration is asked to issue an airworthiness directive that mandates an immediate inspection of the main wing spars and upper wing skin at the wing root on Piper PA-28 airplanes that have exceeded a certain number of service hours, to check for cracking. Inspectors should focus on the bottom surface of the lower spar cap near the outboard forward attachment bolt hole at the wing root, and along the upper wing skin adjacent to the fuselage just forward of the main spar. This recommendation is marked urgent.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
