NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation

Recommendation text

THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: ISSUE AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE TO OPERATORS OF AIRPLANES EQUIPPED WITH ENGINES THAT USE CESSNA AIRCRAFT COMPANY SPIN-ON TYPE OIL FILTER ADAPTER P/N 1250922, OR ANY SPIN-ON ADAPTER OF SIMILAR DESIGN, TO REQUIRE: VERIFICATION EACH TIME THE ADAPTER NUT IS TIGHTENED TO THE OIL PUMP HOUSING, BY USE OF A TORQUE WRENCH, THAT THE ADAPTER NUT HAS BEEN TIGHTENED TO WITHIN THE PRELOAD TORQUE VALUE RANGE SPECIFIED IN THE CESSNA SERVICE MANUAL. APPLICATION OF TORQUE PAINT OR PUTTY BETWEEN THE ADAPTER, NUT, AND OIL PUMP HOUSING SHOULD FOLLOW VERIFICATION OF THE PRELOAD TORQUE.

In plain language (FlightFinder summary)

The FAA is asked to issue an airworthiness directive for airplanes with engines using Cessna Aircraft Company spin-on type oil filter adapter P/N 1250922 or similar adapters. The directive would require operators to verify, using a torque wrench each time the adapter nut is tightened to the oil pump housing, that the nut is tightened to the preload torque value range specified in the Cessna service manual. After verification, torque paint or putty should be applied between the adapter, nut, and oil pump housing.

This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
