NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION: REQUIRE MCDONNELL DOUGLAS TO DEVELOP AND INSTALL A POSITIVE MEANS OF TAILSTRIKE INDICATION TO ALERT FLIGHTCREWS AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL TO THE POSSIBILITY OF TAILSTRIKE DAMAGE DURING THE PREFLIGHT INSPECTION OF DC-10 AND MD-11 AIRPLANES. IN ADDITION, EVALUATE COCKPIT WARNING SYSTEMS THAT WOULD ALERT FLIGHTCREWS TO THE POSSIBILITY OF TAIL STRIKE DAMAGE TO PREVENT CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE AIRPLANE FOLLOWING SUCH DAMAGE.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The FAA is asked to require McDonnell Douglas to develop and install a positive means of tailstrike indication that alerts flightcrews and maintenance personnel to possible tailstrike damage during preflight inspection of DC-10 and MD-11 airplanes. Additionally, the FAA should evaluate cockpit warning systems that would alert flightcrews to the possibility of tailstrike damage, to prevent continued operation of the airplane following such damage.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
