NTSB Safety Recommendation — Aviation
Recommendation text
THE NTSB RECOMMENDS THAT THE FAA: REQUIRE FAIRCHILD TO (2) EXPAND THE DESCRIPTION OF THE WING & WHEEL WELL OVERHEAT ANNUNCIATOR PANEL WARNING LIGHT IN ALL FAIRCHILD/SWEARINGEN SA226 & SA227 SERIES AIRPLANE FLIGHT MANUALS TO NOTE THAT A L OR R WING OVHT ANNUNICATION MAY INDICATE A BRAKE OR WHEEL WELL FIRE & (2) EXPAND THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE FOR A WHEEL WELL & WING OVERHEAT WARNING ANNUNICATION TO ADDRESS A WHEEL WELL FIRE & THE CONSEQUENCES OF OTHER AIRPLANE SYSTEM FAILURES AS A RESULT OF THE FIRE.
In plain language (FlightFinder summary)
The FAA is asked to require Fairchild to update the flight manuals for SA226 and SA227 series airplanes. The update should expand the description of the wing and wheel well overheat annunciator panel warning light to note that an L or R WING OVHT annunciation may indicate a brake or wheel well fire. Additionally, the emergency procedure for a wheel well and wing overheat warning annunciation should be expanded to address a wheel well fire and the consequences of other airplane system failures resulting from the fire.
This plain-language summary is written by FlightFinder to explain the recommendation above. It is not the official wording — the verbatim NTSB text is quoted above.
