Serious incursions (Category A and B)

  • 2015-04-16 · Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport · C525 · RWY 17R · Category A

C525 LANDED ON THE CLOSED PORTION OF RUNWAY 17R. MEN AND EQUIPMENT WERE AT THE EDGE OF THE RUNWAY, BUT NOT ON THE RUNWAY. THE NORTH 5,052 FEET OF THE RUNWAY WAS NOTAM?D CLOSED. THE ATIS INCLUDED REMARKS THAT THE RUNWAY WAS SHORTENED, AND LOCAL CONTROL ADVISED THE RUNWAY WAS SHORTENED IN THE LANDING CLEARANCE. THE ADVISORIES DID NOT SPECIFY THE NORTH PORTION AS INCLUDED IN THE NOTAM. ALL MARKINGS HAD BEEN REMOVED FROM THE CLOSED PORTION OF RUNWAY 17R. ALL INSTRUMENT APPROACHES TO RUNWAY 17R WERE NOTAM?S OUT OF SERVICE. REILS WERE LOCATED AT THE END OF THE RELOCATED THRESHOLD. THE C525 IMPACTED A DIRT MOUND ON THE RUNWAY, CAUSING THE AIRPLANE TO BECOME AIRBORNE 4 FEET BEFORE SETTLING BACK ON THE RUNWAY. IT WAS REPORTED THAT HEAVY BRAKING WAS REQUIRED TO PREVENT A COLLISION WITH THE BARRICADE. AFTER LANDING, THE C525 PILOT SAID HE HEARD THE ADVISORY, BUT DID NOT UNDERSTAND. THE BARRICADE WAS REMOVED AND THE C525 TAXIED TO PARKING.

Counts are reported events, not a danger ranking. Before FY2008 the FAA used a narrower definition, so earlier years are not directly comparable.
