Incident Details
During a simulated forced landing training exercise, the student pilot initially turned in the wrong direction before correcting toward the runway. The aircraft was lower than normal at the initial and downwind points. After prompting from the instructor pilot (IP), the student angled to a close-in base leg. As the turn progressed, airspeed decreased to approximately 65 knots at about 200 feet above ground level (AGL).
Sequence of Events
By the time the IP took control, a high sink rate had developed. Despite the application of power, the aircraft mushed and touched down hard short of the runway. The aircraft bounced and was flown out of the situation. However, the right main landing gear was damaged and the right main wheel separated. After performing slow flight checks, the aircraft was landed without any further damage.
Post-Accident Observations
The IP reported that neither he nor the student heard a stall warning horn during the accident sequence or during the slow flight checks that followed.
