What happened
On July 9, 1982, Pan Am Flight 759 was operating a domestic passenger route connecting Miami to San Diego, with scheduled stops in New Orleans and Las Vegas. The aircraft involved was Boeing 727 registration N473PA. Shortly after departing from New Orleans, the flight encountered severe weather conditions characterized by a microburst.
The sudden wind shear caused the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly during the initial climb phase. Unable to recover, the plane crashed into the suburb of Kenner. The impact resulted in catastrophic damage to the aircraft and the surrounding area. All 145 people on board perished in the accident. Additionally, eight individuals on the ground were killed by the crash.
Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The inquiry focused on the meteorological conditions and the aircraft's performance during the critical takeoff phase. Investigators determined that a microburst was the primary environmental factor contributing to the accident. The study highlighted the dangers of wind shear for commercial aviation operations at the time.
Findings
The investigation concluded that the microburst was the decisive factor in the loss of the aircraft. The sudden change in wind speed and direction prevented the pilots from maintaining adequate lift. This event underscored the need for improved weather detection systems and pilot training regarding wind shear avoidance. The tragedy remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Louisiana's history.
