Accident Overview
The aircraft experienced an engine failure during the climb to cruise phase. The pilot reported that the engine quit, and after one restart attempt, he performed a forced landing. The aircraft subsequently collided with a ditch.
Wreckage Examination
Post-accident inspection of the wreckage showed the aircraft resting upside down. Examination of the fuel system revealed that the left fuel tank contained some fuel, while the right fuel tank was empty. Vegetation beneath the left fuel tank cap and vent had a brown appearance and smelled of fuel. In contrast, vegetation beneath the right fuel tank cap and vent was green and had no fuel odor. The fuel selector was found positioned on the right tank.
