A Cessna 320, cleared for an ILS approach to Runway 13, crashed into ice-covered Lake Utah. A witness reported the aircraft was not on a correct approach and later seen heading west. The accident site was inside the middle marker.

Approach and Witness Observation

The aircraft had been cleared for an Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach to Runway 13. A witness located just north of the runway observed the aircraft pass overhead and noted that it was not on a correct approach. The aircraft then began heading west, as if to circle for a second approach. The witness estimated the aircraft's altitude to be about 200 feet above ground level (AGL).

Accident Details

The aircraft subsequently crashed into the ice-covered surface of Lake Utah. The impact point was 2,725 feet to the right (west) of the extended centerline of Runway 13 and 2,850 feet from the approach end of the runway. The accident site was located inside the middle marker, which is the missed approach point. Evidence indicated that the aircraft impacted in a left-wing-low, nose-down attitude.

Weather and Equipment

The weather minimums for the approach were a ceiling of 300 feet and visibility of 4 statute miles. The altimeter was found set to 30.24 inches of mercury. The pilot had been given an altimeter setting of 30.34 prior to the approach.
