Multiengine Training Accident Involving Propeller Strike During Go-Around

Casualties unknown • Monongahela, PA, US

A certified flight instructor conducting multiengine training experienced a propeller strike on the ground during a simulated single-engine landing go-around maneuver.

What happened

The accident occurred during a multiengine flight instruction session. The certified flight instructor (CFI) reported that all basic single-engine and multiengine maneuvers had been successfully completed prior to the incident. To simulate a single-engine landing scenario, the CFI reduced power on one engine.

According to the CFI's account, the aircraft was flown on a normal approach. Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed slightly long and fast. The left main gear made contact first, causing the aircraft to begin porpoising. The CFI initiated a call for a go-around at this point, during which the landing gear warning horn sounded.

The CFI assumed control of the aircraft and attempted to execute the go-around. However, the right propeller struck the ground. Following the impact, the CFI reduced power, and the aircraft skidded to a stop on the right side of the runway.

Probable cause

The flight instructor's failure to maintain adequate control during the simulated single-engine landing go-around, resulting in a propeller strike with the ground.
