Incident Overview
During a training flight, a certified flight instructor (CFI) was preparing a student for a multiengine private pilot flight test. The lesson focused on demonstrating a precautionary landing following a simulated loss of power after takeoff.
Sequence of Events
At an altitude of about 100 feet above ground level (AGL), the CFI retarded the left engine to idle to simulate a power loss. The instructor then initiated a straight-ahead landing on the remaining runway. The CFI reduced the angle of attack and extended full flaps; the landing gear had not been retracted and remained extended throughout the maneuver.
Outcome
During the landing, a high rate of descent developed and was not arrested before touchdown. Consequently, the aircraft landed hard and sustained damage.
