Landing Gear Failure After Hitting Raised Runway Lip During Landing (N44RM)

Incident Description

During the landing rollout, the left main landing gear contacted a raised lip at the approach end of the runway. The impact caused the gear to fail. The pilot responded by applying aileron input to keep the left wing off the runway surface. This control input was maintained until the aircraft decelerated sufficiently. Subsequently, the aircraft departed the left side of the runway.

Runway Condition

The raised lip was created as a result of construction work performed on the runway overrun area. The construction activity had been publicly announced via a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). However, records indicate that the pilot did not obtain a weather briefing or check the relevant NOTAMs prior to the flight.

Findings

• The left main landing gear failed due to impact with a raised lip at the approach end of the runway.
• The raised lip was a consequence of construction on the overrun.
• A NOTAM regarding the construction had been issued, but there is no evidence that the pilot reviewed it or received a weather briefing.
