What happened
While operating six miles southwest of the airport, the pilots reported experiencing communications difficulties and noted they were utilizing a handheld radio. The tower issued traffic information to the flight and provided clearance to land at the airport.
In response to the traffic, the pilots informed the tower that a go-around might be necessary. Consequently, the tower instructed the crew to execute a go-around, perform a right 360-degree turn, and report back once on final approach.
During the maneuver, the aircraft was observed performing a slow, descending right turn. After completing approximately 120 degrees of the turn, the aircraft disappeared below the treeline. The accident took place over unlit, wooded terrain during the hours of darkness.
