An aircraft disappeared from view while executing a missed approach maneuver over unlit, wooded terrain during the hours of darkness.

What happened

While operating six miles southwest of the airport, the pilots reported experiencing communications difficulties and noted they were utilizing a handheld radio. The tower issued traffic information to the flight and provided clearance to land at the airport.

In response to the traffic, the pilots informed the tower that a go-around might be necessary. Consequently, the tower instructed the crew to execute a go-around, perform a right 360-degree turn, and report back once on final approach.

During the maneuver, the aircraft was observed performing a slow, descending right turn. After completing approximately 120 degrees of the turn, the aircraft disappeared below the treeline. The accident took place over unlit, wooded terrain during the hours of darkness.
