Overview
An airplane on takeoff from Runway 14 experienced a partial loss of engine power at approximately 15 feet above ground. The pilot executed a forced landing in a field straight ahead. During the landing, the left main landing gear sheared off, causing the aircraft to depart the runway and come to rest in a heavily wooded area. The aircraft had not been flown for two weeks prior to the flight.
Sequence of Events
The flight was the first operation of the aircraft in two weeks. During the takeoff roll on Runway 14, as the airplane reached about 15 feet altitude, the engine partially lost power. The pilot decided to land straight ahead in a field. Upon touchdown, the left main landing gear separated from the aircraft. The airplane then exited the runway and entered a heavily wooded area.
Post-Accident Investigation
The FAA examined the engine to determine the cause of the partial power loss. The examination included starting and running the engine at various power settings. No evidence of mechanical malfunction was found. The loss of engine power could not be duplicated during the engine runs. The investigation did not identify a specific reason for the power loss.
