What happened
The pilot was conducting a landing operation on a grass airstrip. During the landing roll, with the brakes applied, the aircraft began to veer toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft eventually departed the paved or prepared surface and collided with a telephone pole located near the edge of the strip.
The investigation
A physical examination of the aircraft was conducted to determine the mechanical cause of the departure. Investigators focused on the braking system, specifically the right brake line which is connected to the parking brake assembly. Examination revealed that this line had separated from its attachment point.
Further inspection of the separated line indicated that a non-standard or "bogus" part had been installed during a previous maintenance event. This improper component failed under the stress of braking, leading to the loss of braking function on the right side and the subsequent veer off the runway.
Findings
The investigation could not determine who performed the improper repair that led to the installation of the faulty part. The separation of the right brake line was the direct mechanical cause of the accident.
