Training Flight Tree Strike During Go-Around

Casualties unknown • Hopedale, MA, US

A student pilot initiated a go-around following an altitude loss during a training flight, resulting in the aircraft striking a tree.

What happened

A training flight was being conducted to allow a rated student pilot (RSP) to build flight time under the supervision of a certified flight instructor (CFI). After departing the airport, the flight operated in the local area for approximately 30 minutes.

During the return leg to the airport, while established on a long final approach to the runway, the CFI instructed the RSP to perform a forced landing maneuver. The student pilot believed the aircraft was too high for the approaching runway and entered a slip to reduce altitude. Upon returning to a normal glide, the student pilot determined that the aircraft was below the necessary glide path required to reach the runway.

In an attempt to correct the situation, the RSP initiated a go-around. During this maneuver, the aircraft struck a tree. The CFI subsequently took control of the aircraft, completed a 360-degree turn, and successfully landed the plane. There were no reported injuries.

Probable cause

The student pilot's decision to execute a go-around after losing too much altitude during a slip led to the aircraft striking a tree.
