Aircraft Overruns Runway 24 After Touchdown

Casualties unknown • Hickory, NC, US

A commercial pilot was unable to stop his aircraft during an approach to a nearby airport, resulting in a runway overrun and collision with a fence.

What happened

After executing a missed approach at his intended destination, the commercial pilot requested an ILS approach to a nearby airport. While performing the ILS, the pilot observed off flags on the glide slope and subsequently transitioned to a localizer approach.

Upon breaking out of the weather, the pilot attempted to land on Runway 24. However, the aircraft could not be stopped within the remaining runway distance. The aircraft overran the runway, collided with a fence, and eventually came to rest against an embankment.

Witnesses at the scene observed the aircraft diving toward the runway prior to touchdown. A flight service station supervisor estimated that the aircraft touched down at the 1,800-foot remaining point on the 6,400-foot long runway.
