The Accident Sequence
The pilot was flight following with ATC when controllers observed the aircraft begin an unannounced turn followed by a rapid descent. Radar data indicated the aircraft entered a decreasing radius turn with an increasing rate of descent until radar coverage was lost.
Aircraft Damage
During the descent, the wings, horizontal stabilizer, and vertical stabilizer separated from the aircraft. Examination of the fracture surfaces revealed no evidence of preexisting cracking or damage.
Pilot Information
The pilot held an instrument rating for several years, but there was no evidence that he was maintaining instrument currency. The coroner reported clinical evidence of diabetes mellitus, which is a disqualifying medical condition for pilots.
Weather Conditions
Clouds near the accident site ranged from broken to overcast, with possible icing conditions at the cruising altitude. Witnesses near the crash site reported that the night was very dark.
