Incident Overview
An aircraft traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia, experienced a loss of power in its left engine while en route. The pilot declared an emergency and initiated an unscheduled landing at Anderson County Airport.
Landing and Runway Excursion
According to the pilot and eyewitness accounts, the airplane touched down approximately halfway down the runway. It subsequently departed the far end of the runway, struck a fence, and crossed an adjacent road before coming to a stop.
Post-Incident Findings
An inspector from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examined the left engine and found it to have seized. A large hole was observed in the top of the engine case.
