What happened
During a go-around maneuver at approximately 100 feet above ground level, the pilot applied full power and engaged the carburetor heat. At that moment, the engine ceased operation completely without any preceding coughing or sputtering.
The pilot reported that the aircraft's heading was approximately 15 degrees off from the runway heading. The aircraft subsequently touched down in a field, where it struck a berm, a tree, and a light post.
During recovery operations, as the aircraft was being trailered back to the airport, a steady stream of fuel was observed flowing from the bottom fuel sump. Upon moving the aircraft to another location, approximately 1 gallon of fuel was found remaining in the tanks.
The investigation
An examination of the engine and fuel system components was performed following the recovery of the aircraft. Investigators found no mechanical discrepancies within the engine or the fuel system components. However, dark sooty deposits were identified within the carburetor throat. It was noted that the carburetor in use does not feature an accelerator pump.
