What happened
The crew of a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 reported experiencing a flight control anomaly during the takeoff phase of flight. The captain noted that the aircraft's rotation was delayed by approximately 3 to 4 knots and required between 30 and 35 pounds of back pressure on the control column to complete the takeoff maneuver. Once the aircraft reached a standard rate of climb, no further issues were observed.
During the same takeoff period, a flight attendant seated in the forward "A" position reported hearing a loud "pinging" noise originating from the area directly beneath her feet. The flight proceeded to its intended destination and landed without further incident.
The investigation
Following the landing, it was discovered that an extra 500 pounds of baggage and cargo had been inadvertently loaded into the forward cargo bay. Company maintenance personnel performed an extensive evaluation and inspection of the aircraft's flight control system; however, no mechanical anomalies were found. Additionally, the operator reported that the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) readout indicated the flight control system operated normally throughout the duration of the flight.
