What happened
On February 6, 2003, while conducting a cross-country instrument flight at an altitude of 5,300 feet, the pilot reported difficulty maintaining altitude. Shortly after this communication, air traffic control lost both radar and radio contact with the aircraft at 18:53.
Following the loss of contact, local authorities initiated both ground and aerial search operations. The wreckage of the aircraft was eventually located in a wooded area at 08:15 on February 7, 2003.
The investigation
An examination of the wreckage was conducted to identify any contributing factors. The inspection did not reveal any evidence of airframe or mechanical malfunctions.
Findings
In accordance with Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular #60-4A, it is noted that pilots are particularly vulnerable to spatial disorientation during periods of low visibility.
