What happened
The incident occurred while an experienced commercial pilot with approximately 8,500 hours of total flight time was engaged in aerial application work. The pilot was operating over a designated field when the aircraft's engine suddenly ceased producing power. In response to the emergency, the pilot initiated a forced landing procedure and directed the airplane toward an adjacent open area.
During the descent and impact sequence, the aircraft collided with several small trees situated within the landing zone. Despite these impacts, the airplane managed to come to a stop in an upright position, preventing a more severe crash scenario. The pilot subsequently reported that the fuel quantity remaining on board at the time of the last takeoff earlier that same day was recorded as 60 gallons.
The investigation
Following the event, investigators examined the aircraft's fuel system components. The inspection revealed that the fuel cells were completely empty, confirming that no usable fuel remained in the tanks at the time of the engine failure.
