Aircraft excursion during landing at Las Vegas Nellis

Casualties unknown • Lakeville, MN, US

A pilot experienced a ground loop and subsequent aircraft excursion after touchdown on runway 12 at Las Vegas Nellis International Airport.

What happened

During the landing phase on runway 12, a Cessna (type not specified) sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that during the final approach, crosswinds were quite strong, necessitating a crab maneuver to maintain alignment with the runway. Upon touchdown, the aircraft was traveling too fast for a three-point landing, causing it to bounce approximately 3 to 4 feet into the air.

Following the bounce, the pilot reported that wind lifted the right wing, causing the aircraft to veer toward the left side of the runway. The aircraft entered a ground loop, during which the left wing struck the ground. As the aircraft continued a leftward turn, it collided with light boxes. During the excursion, the right landing gear separated from the aircraft. The aircraft then struck a ditch approximately 3 to 4 feet deep before coming to a final stop.

At 1415, recorded winds at LVN were 150 degrees at 9 knots, gusting to 14 knots.

Probable cause

The pilot's excessive speed during touchdown led to a bounce and subsequent loss of directional control due to wind effects under the wing.
