Introduction
An airplane undertaking a departure from a private asphalt airstrip experienced a partial loss of engine power shortly after takeoff. The event prompted an emergency landing in an adjacent field, where the aircraft impacted soft, rolling terrain.
Flight Details
Prior to departure, the airplane was loaded with 50 gallons of fuel and 150 gallons of chemical. The takeoff appeared to proceed normally until the aircraft reached approximately 70 feet above ground level during the initial climb.
Incident
At about 70 feet agl, the engine began to miss and backfire, resulting in a loss of climb power. The pilot observed power lines in the airplane's flight path. In response, the pilot reduced throttle, extended full flaps, and initiated a forced landing to a field. During the landing, the airplane landed fast and struck the soft, rolling terrain.
Investigation
Following the event, an investigation was conducted. The magnetos were functionally tested and mechanical continuity throughout the engine was confirmed. Despite these checks, the specific reason for the partial loss of engine power was not determined.
