Piper PA-34-200T runway overrun

Casualties unknown • Lincoln Park, NJ, US

A Piper PA-34-200T overran the departure end of the runway after a landing, resulting in substantial damage to the aircraft.

What happened

On the day of the accident, the pilot performed what was described as a normal touchdown close to the runway numbers. After touching down, the pilot applied the brakes; however, at the midpoint of the runway, the Piper PA-34-200T continued to move at a rapid speed. The pilot briefly considered aborting the landing but ultimately decided to continue the roll.

The aircraft subsequently overran the departure end of the runway and rolled approximately five feet. The sequence ended when the right main landing gear sank into soft ground. The accident resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft, and the pilot was not injured.

The investigation

An examination of the landing conditions revealed that the runway length was 2,942 feet, with a threshold displacement of 840 feet. A review of the aircraft's Information Manual indicated that, under the specific conditions present during the accident, a landing roll of 1,300 feet was required. The pilot reported no mechanical abnormalities regarding the aircraft prior to or during the event.

Probable cause

The aircraft overran the runway end after the pilot failed to stop the plane within the available runway distance.
