What happened
On September 22, 2008, at approximately 1600 UTC, a Fokker F28-4000, registration HC-CDT, was performing a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Quito to Coca, Ecuador. During the takeoff roll on runway 35 at Mariscal Surce Airport (SEQU), the flight crew observed a fire warning light indicating a fire in the forward baggage compartment.
In response to the warning, the crew aborted the takeoff. During the aborted takeoff, the aircraft exited the end of the runway and struck an instrument landing system antenna, a perimeter fence, and a perimeter wall. The aircraft came to a stop near a road. At the time of the event, weather conditions were VMC with a visibility of 6 statute miles and winds from 180 degrees at 4 knots.
Injuries
The accident resulted in 3 serious injuries and 63 minor injuries. The serious injuries were sustained by the airline transport rated pilot-in-command, the first officer, and one flight attendant. The minor injuries were sustained by one flight attendant and 62 passengers.
