Accident Overview
A certified flight instructor was providing instruction to a commercial-rated pilot in a single-engine experimental airplane. The commercial pilot had never flown this specific airplane before.
Sequence of Events
During the second landing attempt, the commercial pilot did not lower the nose wheel onto the ground in a timely manner. As a result, the airplane became airborne again and veered to the right, reaching a 20-degree bank. The flight instructor then took control of the airplane and leveled the wings. The airplane touched down a second time, but it traveled off the runway onto dirt. Subsequently, the nose gear separated, and the airplane struck a berm.
