What happened

On February 28, 2009, at approximately 11:00 AM CST, a Bell 212 helicopter, registered as XC-DES, crashed while attempting to take off from a soccer field near Jesus Maria, Aguascalientes, Mexico. The aircraft was being operated by Comision Nacional de Agua for a VIP flight.

The takeoff was performed in a downwind condition, with trees and power lines surrounding the takeoff area. Approximately 120 feet after departing the takeoff spot, the main rotor blades struck a concrete power pole. The helicopter came to rest in an upright position and sustained substantial damage. There were 10 minor injuries reported among the crew and passengers, including the pilot, a mechanic, and eight passengers; there were no fatalities.
