Accident Details
The pilot was departing east from a 900-foot-long by 50-foot-wide private turf runway. As the airplane climbed to about 20 feet above ground level, a "significant" wind gust pushed the aircraft left. The left wing contacted a tree branch, causing the airplane to spin. It came to rest facing opposite the direction of departure. Both wings sustained damage, and the engine separated from the airframe.
Pilot Account
When asked how the accident could have been prevented, the pilot stated that he should remain south of the runway centerline, noting that the predominant winds are southerly.
Weather
Reported winds in the vicinity around the time of the accident were from the west at 13 knots.
Examination
A Federal Aviation Administration inspector examined the wreckage and found no evidence of preimpact mechanical malfunctions. The pilot also reported no mechanical issues.
