What happened

On April 28, 2009, at approximately 1702 UTC, a Cirrus Design SR2 לו22, registered as 4X-CWN, crashed into terrain on Mt. Ainos, Greece. The aircraft was operating a VFR flight from Zakynthos International Airport (LGZA) to Corfu International Airport (LGKR).

After departing LGZA, the aircraft was approximately 25 miles north of the departure airport when it encountered instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The pilot attempted to return to Zakynthos International Airport, but the aircraft subsequently collided with the mountain. The wreckage was located at an elevation of 4,400 feet, roughly 7.8 miles east of Kefalonia Island International Airport (LGKF).

The crash resulted in 2 fatal injuries. The aircraft was destroyed by a post-impact fire.
