Incident Overview
During a training flight, a student pilot was practicing soft field landings. On the third approach, the student flared the airplane, and it entered a full stall at an altitude of approximately 5 to 7 feet above the grass runway. The airplane touched down, and the flight instructor pulled back on the yoke in an attempt to recover the landing. Subsequently, the nose landing gear struck the terrain and separated from the aircraft.
Damage Assessment
Examination of the airplane revealed that the firewall and the top of the left wing were wrinkled, resulting in substantial damage to the airframe. The flight instructor did not report any mechanical problems with the airplane prior to the incident.
Occupant Status
Both the flight instructor and the student pilot were not injured during the event.
