Overview
An experimental weight-shift-control aircraft was involved in an accident during takeoff from runway 18.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, during the initial climb, when the aircraft reached about 10 to 12 feet above the ground, it began to descend and drift off the runway centerline. The pilot was unable to correct the descent and lateral drift. Consequently, the aircraft landed hard on its rear landing gear. As it bounced twice, the right wingtip impacted the terrain, and the aircraft tipped onto its side.
The pilot reported no pre-impact mechanical malfunctions or failures.
Damage
The wing and its king post sustained substantial damage.
Weather Conditions
The pilot stated that local surface winds were from the west-southwest at 3 to 5 knots. A nearby weather station reported surface winds from the northwest at 7 knots.
