Accident Overview
A private pilot reported that while landing his tailwheel-equipped airplane at a remote, 650-foot-long private airstrip, the aircraft struck a tree stump and nosed over. The flight was a personal cross-country trip conducted under 14 CFR Part 91.
Approach and Impact
According to the pilot, wind conditions necessitated an easterly approach over an area of stump-covered, down-sloping terrain. During the approach, the airplane's right main wheel hit a tree stump located at the approach end of the airstrip. Following the impact, the airplane nosed over.
Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings, fuselage, and empennage.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical problems with the airplane. In his written report to the NTSB, he noted that the accident might have been avoided if he had waited until wind conditions allowed for a different approach, or if he had delayed reducing engine power until after ensuring clearance with the stump.
